Sebastian Trimpe has been appointed as a Full Professor (W3) in the faculty of Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. Together with his team, Prof. Trimpe is building up the new Institute for Data Science in Mechanical Engineering (DSME), which he is heading. The new institute focuses on fundamental research at the intersection of data science and engineering. The researchers develop new theory and algorithms in machine learning, control and cyber-physical systems, and apply their insights in innovative testbeds and collaborations with partners in industry and academia. In teaching, Prof. Trimpe and his team teach fundamentals of computer science and data science for engineers, as well as state-of-the-art techniques in these disciplines. The new institute also offers highly research-oriented student projects and classes such as on the emerging topic of learning-based control. Before joining RWTH Aachen University, Sebastian Trimpe was a Max Planck Research Group Leader (W2) at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) in Stuttgart, where he was heading the Intelligent Control Systems group. Until early 2021, his MPI-IS group is transitioning to Aachen and continuing its research activities at DSME.
